Etymologically, the term "batik" comes from the Javanese "ambathik" meaning "wide" or "broad" (referring to the cloth), and "nithik" meaning "to make dots" and later developed into the Javanese term: "bathik", which means connecting dots into a certain image on a broad or wide cloth. The Javanese word: "bathikan" can also mean "drawing" or "writing". The term "bathik" was later absorbed into the Indonesian language as "batik". So, basically "batik" can refers to both a process and the finished (material) result of the process of connecting dots on a piece of cloth.
